Birthday approaching

In two weeks my youngest girl will become 2 years old. Two years! Unbelievable…  Her birth could have been two days ago just as well. Time goes by so quickly. 

Two little projects I’ve been working on last week for  her birthday: 

A garland of crochet hearts in all colors of the rainbow. The pattern I’ve stolen from Skip to my Lou.



In the crèche my daughter visits, it is custom to treat the other kids not only to a snack, but also to a little present. This year I made colorful cats of felted wool.

Holidays

How were your holidays? Spend the days with the people you love? Enjoyed delicious meals? Got pretty presents? And also thought a little while about the actual reason we celebrate Christmas?
My holidays were great! Christmas Eve I spend with my little family and my in laws. First Christmas Day (in The Netherlands we celebrate a first and a second Christmas Day) we went over to my brother’s, were my whole family was gathered: parents, sister with boyfriend and our hosts of cours, my brother, his girlfriend and his little daughter. We shared a light lunch and after that we played a little game. It does not translate very well, but let’s call it ‘throwing the dice’, which I never played before. 

Rules of the game (you can skip this text in cursive if you don’t like/hate games)

Everybody who wanted to play, had to buy one present (some days before Christmas, that is). The rules of the game are as follows: everybody takes turns in throwing the dice and when you throw six, you can choose one of the presents.  Of course you choose the thing you like the most. When everybody has  a present the game really begins. Somebody has to set an alarmclock without telling the others at what time the clock will be ringing. Everybody keeps taking turns in throwing the dice, following the rules below. There are six possibilities, dependent on the number you throw.
  1.   Everybody has to give his/her present to the person on the left
  2.   Everybody has to give his/her present to the person on the right
  3.   Throw again
  4.   Pass over your next turn
  5.   Change present with the person right or left from you
  6.   Change present with somebody of your own choice

Goal of the game is to have the present you like the most in your possession as the alarmclock rings. 

I won a pretty little birdfeeder! 



Later we went out for diner. There were a lot of perfect moments this day (especially because it was a long time since we all spend Christmas together), but the best were my two girls, who played without fighting the whole day long and behaved so very well in the restaurant.

The second day of Christmas, we didn’t do much but eating lunch in a restaurant with my parents and watching movies on the couch. 
As far as the presents on my wish list: I didn’t get any of them, but instead I now have the most beautiful bird feeder!

Elementary School Christmas Diner

Now and than I take a look at the statistics of my blog and see that most of the readers come from anywhere but The Netherlands, so from now on I will write in English. Sorry in advance for the many mistakes you therefore probably have to read in my blogs, because English is not my mother tongue.

Yesterday my little daughter had her very first X-mas diner at her elementary school and I, the mother of course, had to prepare some snacks for her classmates. I kept it simple and made cheese fingers and empanadas.

For the cheesefingers you only need three ingredients:
  • ·         Puff paste
  • ·         Grated cheese
  • ·         Egg yolk
Cut the puff paste in sticks, cover with egg yolk and sprinkle with the cheese. Put in a pre-heated oven (200°C) until the sticks are golden brown. That’s all. Little effort, great taste!

Ingredients for empanadas:
  • ·         Puff pastry
  • ·         1 chickenbreast
  • ·         50 grammes of chorizo
  • ·         ½ paprika (red pepper)
  • ·         ½ onion
  • ·         clove of garlic
  • ·         salt/pepper
Cut the chickenbreast, chorizo, red pepper, garlic, and onion in little pieces and the chorizo in strips. Bake the chicken until well done and add pepper, onion, chorizo and garlic. Sprinkle salt and pepper as appreciated. Bake until done.
Put some of the mix on a sheet of puff pastry and fold the pastry over to form a triangle. Press the edges with a fork so the mix is closed in.
Bake the empanadas in a pre-heated oven (200°C) until golden brown.

Finally!


Finally! I finished this poncho (and it will be my last poncho; I repeat LAST poncho). I worked on it for about four weeks. Four weeks of crochet and attaching fringe one by one. That’s a long time! I like projects that are finished in two, three days, one week max. Patience is definitely not one of those decent features I carry within me.
But…, my daughter loves the poncho and that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?!

Vlaamse stoofpot met bier

Mocht u eens een dag niet weten wat te koken in de op handen zijnde horrorwinter (zo heb ik mij laten informeren), dan heb ik hier een smakelijk winterrecept.

Wat u nodig heeft voor twee personen:
·         300 gram hamlappen
·         Zout en peper
·         Boter
·         Een el bloem
·         Een ui
·         75 gram gerookte spekblokjes
·         250 cc donker bier
·         Een laurierblaadje
·         Een takje tijm
·         Een el mosterd
·         200 gram winterwortel

Snijd de ham in blokjes en bestrooi deze met zout, peper en bloem. Laat de boter smelten in een stoofpan en bak het vlees totdat het rondom bruin is. Verwijder het vlees uit de pan en voeg aan het overgebleven bakvet de ui en de spekblokjes toe. Doe het bier erbij. Als dit kookt, voeg dan ham, laurierblaadje, tijm en mosterd toe. Laat dit 45 minuten sudderen met het deksel op de pan. Voeg na een kwartier de wortel toe. Laurierblaadje en tijmtakje verwijderen en serveren met dikke patatten. Smullen maaaarrr! 

Dit recept komt, met wat aanpassingen hier en daar, uit het tijdschrift ‘Boodschappen’, maar aangezien dit gratis verstrekt wordt, neem ik niet aan dat het een probleem is dat ik het recept hier publiceer.
